A week after earthquake, Sikkim gets back to normalcy
One week past since the earthquake devastated Sikkim is now getting back to normalcy. Most of the roads are restored and rescue operation is still on amidst heavy rain and mudslide.
State government assured affected people that government would help to reconstruct destroyed houses. 23 schools have been completely destroyed and 190 have been partially damaged. Government will take necessary steps to restore those schools.
Singtam-Chungthang road is almost cleared debris and would be open for normal traffic soon. Army personnel who were working tirelessly since the devastation clear most of the roads to north Sikkim.
Fifty-two fresh relief camps have been started and near about 2000 people have taken shelter there. Most of these people trekked down to get food and shelter. The camps, being run by NGOs, social organizations and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are also providing food, drinking water and medicine to people. To prevent any out break of water borne disease, a central team is visiting various relief camps.
It is reported that fresh landslides occurred in some areas of North district last night that was lashed by frequent rains. Fortunately, no fresh damage was reported as yet due to rains.
