A week after earthquake, Sikkim gets back to normalcy

One week past since the earthquake devastated Sikkim is now getting back to normalcy. Most of the roads are restored and rescue operation is still on amidst heavy rain and mudslide.

State government assured affected people that government would help to reconstruct destroyed houses. 23 schools have been completely destroyed and 190 have been partially damaged. Government will take necessary steps to restore those schools.

Singtam-Chungthang road is almost cleared debris and would be open for normal traffic soon. Army personnel who were working tirelessly since the devastation clear most of the roads to north Sikkim.

Fifty-two fresh relief camps have been started and near about 2000 people have taken shelter there. Most of these people trekked down to get food and shelter. The camps, being run by NGOs, social organizations and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are also providing food, drinking water and medicine to people. To prevent any out break of water borne disease, a central team is visiting various relief camps.

It is reported that fresh landslides occurred in some areas of North district last night that was lashed by frequent rains. Fortunately, no fresh damage was reported as yet due to rains.

Death Toll Rises to 78, Centre Assures Help

Death toll in Sikkim earthquake rises to 78. Central Government promises all kinds of help to cope with the crisis.

Home minister P. Chidambaram conduct a meeting with Pawan chamling, Chief Minister of Sikkim, at Gangtok. After reaching Gangtok, Chidambaram met with the injured at Manipal Hospital at Gangtok.

Home minister announced Rs. 500 million assistance to Sikkim and assured every kind of help they needed to restore normalcy. He also did an aerial survey to see the most damaged areas.

Death toll may rise, as rescue teams are yet to reach all areas due to heavy landslide. Ten more deaths are reported today.

Flash flood and landslide creating obstacle to the rescue teams. Huge numbers of rescue workers are engaged in this operation. Heavy rain causes fresh landslides. This is the main huddle to reach worst-affected areas.

Sikkim Earthquake: Death Toll Crosses 60

Death toll of Sikkim earthquake crosses 60. The army airlifted 35 tourists including two foreigners from the worst affected areas of Sikkim. Lachen is still cut off from Gangtok and more tourists need to be airlifted. Tourists are completely shocked over the incident.

Most of the tourists visiting Sikkim are in a state of shock. They are not in a position to narrate the horrific incident. Lots of tourists who were visiting north Sikkim, the worst affected area, are yet to reach Gangtok and are staying at temporary army camps.

As rescue workers are inching towards the epicenter of the quake, the death toll is also rising. Till today death toll rises to sixty in the state.

Army, NDRF and disaster management personnel are working tirelessly to rescue the victims. They are yet to reach worst hit Chungthang, which is surrounded by mountains.

Earthquake: Death Toll Rises to 19 in Sikkim

19 people are being killed in Sikkim on yesterday’s earthquake. Over 100 people injured in Sikkim after this 6.8 magnitude earthquake. This heavy tremor causes huge damage to roads and buildings in Sikkim. Most of the casualties have been found in the North district.

Power was restored in Gangtok today morning. Fearing aftershocks, residents stayed outside their houses throughout the night. Lots of aftershocks created panic among the people of Sikkim. Search and rescue operation is becoming very tough due to heavy rain and landslides. It is reported that some important roads are washed away due to number of landslides. Due to this national highway has also been blocked.

Huge numbers of ITBP personnel are engaged in rescue operation. Hundreds of personnel from national disaster control are also reaching Gangtok to speed up the search and rescue operation. Relief materials are being air lifted to Sikkim.

Huge numbers of tourists are stranded in Sikkim. Gangtok hotels are taking all necessary steps for the safety of the tourists.

 

Youth Awareness Drive by Sikkim Yuva Samaj

Sikkim Yuva Samaj (SKYS), an organization for the welfare of youths of the state. Young people use this platform to voice their problems. Presently the members of SKYS are visiting educational organizations to aware students regarding education and government’s policy on education. In this visit the committee members also informing about the motto of SKYS.

Students are also using them to pass their views and problems regarding education to the government. Lots of youths found to be interested in this mission and they are joining SKYS. SKYS is planning to organize a state convention, where youths from all over the state will gather and have a chance to discuss on various issues regarding youths and government policy. SKYS is also determined to eradicate various evil practices from youths.

State Junior Taekwondo Championship: Central Dojang Gets the Gold Medal

Fourth State Junior Taekwondo Championship started at Paljor Stadium from 3rd August. Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association organizes this championship.

Taekwondo players from different parts of the state gathered here to participate in this championship. Y.B Thapa, president of Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association was present there. Mr. Trilok Subba, chief coach of Sikkim told the winners of this championship will get chance to participate the coming Taekwondo Kheorugi Championship at Ranchi.

Central Dojang team comes as winner of this championship and MCM Dojang as runner up.

Sikkim’s First Post Office will Go Heritage

Rhenock post office of Sikkim would get heritage status from Central Government. This post office exists since 1910. Some people do believe that it was there before 1910. People here are very happy as the post office is getting heritage status.

The post office shifted to its new building in 1957. People now used to visit the new building of this post office for their purpose but they always love to recollect the architecture of the old building.

As the post office is going to get heritage status, the tourism will get boosted in this little state.

Baichung Bhutia Confident of Winning Independence Cup

Baichung Bhutia, renowned footballer of India portrayed his self-belief of succeeding in the Independence Cup.

Baichung Bhutia, player of the United Sikkim Football Club told, “Our major plans are to qualify for I-League and wining the Federation Cup. Forthcoming Independence Cup would be a major tournament for us.”

About seven players from Sikkim including Bhutia are expected to take part in the Federation Cup and the I-League tournaments.

Bhutia would be playing for the United Sikkim Football Club (USFC) for which a new player Nim Tshering Lepcha has been selected as the captain.
